To remind Minnesotans about the importance of accessibility, Governor Tim Walz proclaimed May 16 to be Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD). As stated in the proclamation:
WHEREAS: The third Thursday of May is designated as Global Accessibility Awareness Day, a day to get everyone talking, learning, and thinking about inclusive digital practices; and
WHEREAS: More than half a million Minnesotans, or approximately 11%, report having one or more disabilities, underlining the importance of building a world where people with disabilities have the opportunities, independence, and respect they deserve; and
WHEREAS: Executive Order 19-01 states that all Minnesota residents have a right to equitable access to government services and employment opportunities, whether in person or online; and
WHEREAS: By supporting accessible technology, we ensure that everyone, including those living with a disability, has access to the same information and government services with readable content, usable interfaces, superior search results, and effective mobile access; and
WHEREAS: Creating accessible digital content and services is a shared responsibility as is enlightening others about digital access and inclusion.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, TIM WALZ, Governor of Minnesota, do hereby proclaim Thursday, May 16, 2023 as: DIGITAL ACCESSIBILITY DAY in the State of Minnesota.
