All macOS Devices Will Require Action

This fall, all macOS users will need to take a few steps to maintain compliance with University policy.

The University is migrating to a new server for managing University-owned Apple devices. This change requires each user to spend a few minutes to complete their computer's move to the new server.

What will happen?

  • The migration process will start automatically; users may receive notifications.
  • A web page with step-by-step instructions will be displayed to the user. The steps vary depending on the device and macOS version.
  • Once the user completes these simple steps, the computer will register itself with the new server and no further action is required.

When will this happen?

We will roll out the process beginning in September and will notify units ahead of time.

Why is this required?

All University-owned devices are required to be centrally managed for auditing and compliance purposes. The procedure will ensure that the devices remain compliant with University policy. Non-compliant devices will be removed from service.

Why can't it just happen automatically?

Apple has a strong focus on security and privacy. So, they make it more difficult to automate to prevent malware from automatically taking control of your device. Hence, users must take explicit steps to give us permission to manage their devices (to combat possible phishing attempts).

Some devices will require OS updates

All devices must be upgraded to macOS 10.15 (Catalina) or newer to meet current University security policies. Devices that aren't compatible with macOS 10.15 must be replaced this year.
