Vol 3.4: Create a Course Google Group, Slide Safely, BetaTest Smarty Cards

Create a Course Google Group

Create Google Course Groups!

The University of Minnesota has automated Course Google Groups, a mailing list of all students enrolled in a Canvas course. It is also linked to course enrollment databases, automatically removing students who have dropped or added the course. That makes ensuring access to folders and Google documents for projects and assignments a snap.

PowerPoint and Google Slides can be improved to include accessible practices. These practices (per Accessible U: Slide Presentations Do's and Don't tab) include:

  • Use Preset Layouts to improve screen reading functions
  • Use Unique Slide Titles to make navigation and references easier
  • Write Descriptive Alt Text to describe pictures and images
  • Include Brief and Easily Readable Content by increasing the font sizes to 24 and using the notes field

Additionally, the University of Minnesota offers a wonderful short course called "Digital Accessibility: Create accessible Slide Presentations".

Overall, the course takes about 3-4 hours to complete and provides an opportunity work through the Accessible Slides checklist at your own pace.
