Next Generation Network and WiFi Update

What's New Next Generation Network
September 1, 2017

Phase 1 is nearly complete. WiFi should remain stable. And eduroam should be your wireless network choice on campus.

The Next Generation Network (NGN) project at the University of Minnesota will upgrade all components of the University's network, both wired and WiFi, over the next 3 years. The new network will increase speed and throughput capacity, improve WiFi access, and implement an advanced security infrastructure. This upgrade will be system-wide, including all campuses and satellite locations across the state.

Phase 1: Upgrading WiFi

Upgrading WiFi is the first phase of the NGN project. This summer, WiFi upgrades were completed in all buildings located on the University of Minnesota Duluth campus and are nearing completion at our remote sites. Check out some interesting facts from the UMD WiFi upgrade phase:

  • 1,334 Aruba Access Points (APs) are currently deployed, there will be 1,368 when project is completed.
  • 25,400 unique devices were on the network during the first week of classes.
  • 85% of users are on eduroam.

WiFi Should Remain Stable

In addition to AP replacements, phase one also included a move from UMD-WiFi to eduroam as UMD's secure wireless network. Users on the UMD campus may have experienced disruptions in their WiFi service the first few days of the semester. ITSS worked with our wireless network vendor to identify important network infrastructure settings that will have significant system-wide implications for the other UMN campuses as they move to the same network infrastructure. We appreciate UMD community members' patience as we worked through these issues.

As of August 31st, WiFi issues were successfully resolved and performance should remain stable.

Use Eduroam for Your Wireless Network

UMD faculty, staff and students should use eduroam as their WiFi network. In light of the infrastructure changes previously mentioned, users should check their WiFi networks to ensure eduroam is their selected wireless network.

If you are having trouble finding or maintaining a connection to eduroam, visit the ITSS wireless web page or contact the Help Desk at 218-726-8847 or itsshelp@d.umn.edu.
