Next Generation Network Update

This major 3-year project to standardize service and improve security is well underway. Learn what's next.

Network teams at UMD and in the Twin Cities have been busy continuing work on the Next Generation Network (NGN) system-wide project. We are one year into this project, which includes upgrades to all components of the University's network, both wired and WiFi, over a 3-year span. The fully upgraded network will standardize service and improve security management offerings system-wide, including all campuses and satellite locations across the state.

Next Phase

The next phase of the project includes migration to new network cores and related equipment at UMD. That work is scheduled for the morning of September 29, 2018. We have been and will continue to reach out to campus partners to let them know of this upcoming work, and to minimize disruptions as much as possible.

Spring - Summer 2019 Phase

In addition to work related to the network cores migration, ITSS staff are working on power improvements and fiber optic paths that are required for the Distribution/Edge phase of the NGN project. During that phase (Spring - Summer 2019), all network switches will be upgraded. That work will require building-by-building network outages. Communication plans for that phase of NGN are in development.
