Upgrade Your Windows 7 Computer Now

ITSS is offering 2 options to assist units in the upgrade process.

Windows 7 support from Microsoft ends in January, 2020. Computers running Windows 7 may be vulnerable to viruses, intrusions, or data theft. As they present a high security risk, they may be blocked from accessing the University's network.

Upgrade Choices

There are hundreds of Windows 7 computers on the UMD network. To assist units in the upgrade process, ITSS if offering 2 options:

In Place Upgrade

During a scheduled office visit, an ITSS staff person (or your unit IT support staff) starts the upgrade from the Microsoft Software Center. The process verifies that your computer hardware will support Windows 10, completes a backup and installs the upgrade.

Average time to complete the upgrade is 1-3 hours and there is no charge for this service. This service is only available for devices that are on Active Directory.

To schedule an In Place Upgrade, call the ITSS TechCenter Helpdesk at 218-726-8847.

TechCenter Upgrade

The device owner brings their computer to the TechCenter for check-in and the upgrade is completed by ITSS staff. A limited number of loaner laptops are available while the device is in for service. This option may be required for older or non-standard hardware.

The average turnaround time is 1-3 days; some Friday drop-off/Monday pickup times will be available in November and December (check the TechCenter page for updates). The cost for this service is $62.80.
