UMD Samba Server Upgrade and Cutover

On January 4, 2023 at 6 a.m., ITSS will upgrade the campus Samba Service to a new server.

What is Samba Service?

Samba Service provides access to tilde site files (myweb) and Windows files stored on Linux space provided by ITSS (myfiles). It is used on Macs, Windows laptops, etc. that use the Samba protocol. Students use the service in the labs for coursework.

Why is an Upgrade Needed?

Authentication is being switched from local password file authentication to Active Directory (AD). This is because the Office of Information Technology (OIT) is retiring x.500.

Advantages

Modern software packages such as our Samba upgrade provides:

  • Better performance
  • Enhanced security

Seamless Upgrade Anticipated

All current faculty, staff, and students have AD authentication access and will retain access to Samba.

The new system has been extensively tested, and we expect the change to be seamless. We chose the date and time, January 4, 2023 at 6 a.m., to limit possible service interruptions.
