Print queues have been set up in Active Directory for many network printers on campus. Below are details on how to add an AD printer to workstations that are also on AD.

If your printer is on the network but is not in the printer list, please contact the ITSS HelpDesk (x8847, itsshelp@d.umn.edu) and provide the following information:

  • Printer network name (for example: kplz191-lw)
  • Make and model of printer (for example: HP 4500N)

There are several ways to add a printer. If the first method doesn't work, try the second.

Add a Printer via File Explorer

These instructions work similarly on Windows 7, though it will look differently. Click here to skip to instructions specific to Windows 7.

For a computer that has been added to Active Directory:

  1. If you are off campus, sign into UMD's VPN service.
  2. Open a File Explorer window.

  3. In the location bar, type "\\umd-print2\" and hit enter.

  4. All available printers should appear below. Find the one you want, and double click it.
  5. The drivers will automatically install, and the printer is added to your computer.

Add a Printer by Searching the DIrectory

If you are on Windows 7, click here to skip ahead.

  1. If you are off campus, sign into UMD's VPN service.
  2. Click the Start button, then choose Settings.
  3. Click Devices.
  4. Scroll to the very bottom, and under "Related settings" click Devices and printers.

  5. In the Devices and Printers window, click Add a printer.

  6. Click "The printer that I want isn't listed"

  7. Choose "Find a printer in the directory..." then click Next.
  8. In the "Find Printers" window, optionally, in the "Name:" box, type the printer name, or just the beginning of the printer name, then click Find Now.
  9. Find the printer you want to add in the Search results below.
  10. Click to highlight that printer, and then click OK.

  11. The drivers will automatically install, and the printer is added to your computer.
  12. Click Next, then Finish to close the setup wizard.

Windows 7 Instructions

If you have a Windows 7 computer that has been added to Active Directory:

  1. If you are on wireless or off campus, sign in to UMD's VPN service.
  2. Sign in to the computer with your AD credentials (your Internet/email name and password).

  3. Click on "Start".
  4. Click on "Devices and Printers".
  5. Click on "Add a printer".

  6. Click on "Add a network, wireless or Bluetooth printer".

  7. Click on "The printer that I want isn't listed".

  8. Click on "Find a printer in the directory, based on location or feature".

  9. Click on "Next".
  10. In the Search results, click on the printer you want to add.

  11. Click on "OK".
  12. After successfully adding the printer, click on "Next", then "Finish".
