UNDERSTAND YOUR LICENSE

  • MATLAB is distributed at the University of Minnesota on a cost-recovery basis, meaning every MATLAB license is paid for at some level; Your license may be individual, or covered by a department-wide or college-wide license. If you are uncertain of your license status for MATLAB at the University of Minnesota, contact software@umn.edu for more information.

  • MATLAB users have three different options for MATLAB installation: Concurrent (uses license server), Standalone, or Online.

  • MATLAB users installing software for themselves use a Mathworks account to download and install MATLAB.

  • IT Staff deploying MATLAB for users should contact software@umn.edu for additional options.

  • Your MATLAB license includes the toolboxes listed at it.umn.edu/matlab  (scroll download and select a "purchase type", then scroll down a little further to see a list of components).

ITEMS NEEDED FOR INSTALLATION:

DECIDE HOW YOU WILL INSTALL MATLAB

  • Concurrent: MATLAB software is installed on your computer, but the license is obtained from a license server. To use MATLAB, you must have a network connection on-campus or use VPN during your entire MATLAB session. If you purchased special toolboxes not included in our contract, use concurrent licensing. Our license server supports MATLAB R2017b, and several earlier releases.

  • Standalone: MATLAB software and licenses are on your computer. No network connection is needed to run MATLAB. Mathworks refers to this as a "Campus" license.

  • Online: No installation is needed. Run MATLAB from any computer with an internet connection.

  • See specific installation directions below for each way of installing and using MATLAB.

SIGNUP FOR MATHWORKS ACCOUNT AND ASSOCIATE LICENSE

End users installing MATLAB for themselves need to sign up for an account with MathWorks, and associate our license with this account. This account is used to download MATLAB directly from MathWorks, and to activate your copy of MATLAB.

  1. Go to  https://www.mathworks.com/mwaccount/

  2. Login with an existing account if you have one, or create a new account. You must use your University of Minnesota email with this account.
  3. Look for "Associate License"  (see either the upper right corner under your login name, or look for an Associate license link on your account page)
  4. IMPORTANT! USE THE CORRECT KEY! Enter the activation key. There are two separate activation keys listed above. Make sure you select the correct activation key for the way you intend to use MATLAB (concurrent, standalone, or online).
  5. A "Success" message shows your account is associated with the license.
  6. You can associate another license with your account if needed by repeating steps 3. - 4.

For additional directions for concurrent installation, see z.umn.edu/matlabinstallguide

RUN MATLAB: Our MATLAB concurrent license requires a continuous on-campus network connection to use MATLAB or any of its toolboxes. If you have a network connection but are off-campus, you will need to use VPN (Virtual Private Network) to run MATLAB.
