ITSS Services: Transition to "Common Good" Support

Units will no longer be charged for setup, imaging, repair, and recycling labor on University-owned devices.

Under a new campus financial model, ITSS has eliminated labor charges for most support services on University-owned equipment. These services are now classified as Common Good services and funded centrally by the University.

What This Means for You

In the past, units paid for many IT services through internal billing. Moving these services to the Common Good model removes that barrier. Departments can now access secure, reliable, high-quality technical support without worrying about labor costs.

What Changes and What Stays the Same

  • No labor charges: You will not be billed for staff time to set up, repair, or recycle University-owned computers.
  • Less paperwork: Departments no longer need to process monthly Internal Sales Voucher (ISV) paperwork for IT labor.
  • Hardware costs remain: Departments still pay for physical hardware, including new computers, monitors, docks, and out-of-warranty replacement parts.

All hardware purchases will continue to be coordinated through ITSS and the UMD Bookstore.

Support for Student-Owned Devices

ITSS will continue to repair student-owned devices. Students are responsible for both parts and labor costs. Service rates have been reduced.

Why ITSS Is Making This Change

The Common Good model allows ITSS to focus resources on security, student success, and campus priorities. Central funding also allows ITSS to provide consistent support to departments across campus, regardless of individual budgets.

Other ITSS services will also move to this model. Review the updated Service Level Agreements on our website.
