Library and IT Staff discuss where and when to use PDF files, and where web pages and other documents are appropriate.

About the PDF and Alternatives

Portable Document Format (PDF) was once the default format for digital content, the gold standard for document storage, security, and importance. However, this venerable document no longer requires a license to edit, can be unlocked easily, is quite outmoded for handheld devices, and is challenging to be made accessible. 

Luckily there are many ways to update, replace, or fix your PDFs.  Join ITSS and Kathryn A. Martin Library Staff for a presentation that covers:

  • the long history of the  as well as modern considerations for security and ease of access
  • a demonstration of the time investment to remediate pdf to accessible formats
  • workflows for creating accessible documents in efficient manners, including PDF to Word and PowerPoint, and vice Versa.
  • flowcharts on when PDF, HTML, or DOCx documents should be used
  • a look at the Library Course Materials reserve system in Canvas

The presenters will leave time for questions and opportunities to set up individual and group consultations on document accessibility and library resources.
