ITSS provides networking within all buildings on the UMD campus and many connected remote sites (see User Eligibility). The University also connects to both the global Internet and a number of special research and education networks commonly referred to as Internet2. These networks provide high-bandwidth connectivity enabling and supporting campus operations, research collaborations, and educational opportunities regionally, nationally, and around the world.
Service Offerings
Wireless Networks
Provide wireless service in all campus buildings, residence halls, and classrooms. eduroam is the fastest, most secure offering and is preferred for faculty, staff, students, and visitors from other institutions that also employ eduroam. UofM-Guest is a basic access network available for any guests that do not have a University account.
Wired Networks
Provide wired service in all campus buildings and residence hall lounge areas. Supported rates are 100Mb and higher when connecting directly to a wall jack and 10Mb and higher when chaining through an Avaya VoIP phone.
Firewalls
Because of the diverse needs of the U community there is no central network firewall protecting computers. The University is protected by basic Network Filters (list of blocked ports; requires authentication for University staff to view). Additional firewall services can be added to each network upon request and department charge back.
Virtual Private Networks (VPN)
Some applications managed by the University only allow access from the University's network. Virtual Private Network (VPN) service allows you to connect remotely, tunnel back to the UMD, and make things work as if you were local. Additional special-use VPN services can be added upon request and department charge back.
Internet of Things (IoT)
This service allows faculty, staff, and students to register devices for long-term wireless access even if they don’t support WPA2-Enterprise (username and password) authentication. Common in residence halls for connecting devices such as smart TVs, gaming systems, and various streaming devices like Roku and Apple TV.
DNS and DHCP Services
ITSS provides DHCP and DNS service for all campus networks and remote sites. Examples include assigning a DNS name to a specific IP address, configuring a fixed DHCP reservation, and reviewing DHCP leases to determine usage.
