Request Headsets
Each headset is available for three (3) day checkouts to UMD students through the MediaHub Checkout, located in Kirby Plaza 165.
Students interested in checking out a headset should visit ITSS Connect2 Checkout. Once registered with our reservation system, search for “Meta Quest 2”.
Requested items will be available for pickup in approximately 1 hour at the Tech Center in Kirby Plaza 165.

- MetaQuest Case
- USB-C Charger
- 3’ Charging Cable
- 16’ Charging Cable
- MetaQuest Controllers
- 2 aa rechargeable batteries.
Device Setup
Devices are checked out with factory settings. To use your MetaQuest 2 headset, you will have to:
- Download the Meta application to a mobile device (Android/ Apple)
- Follow the steps to create or log into your Meta Account.
- Power on your MetaQuest 2 Headset.
- When prompted, pair the MetaQuest 2 with your phone and Meta Account
- Install updates.
Setting up Wi-Fi
Connect to EduRoam
If you are using the University’s Eduroam Wi-Fi,
- Go To Settings > WIFI
- Select eduroam as your network.
- Edit the Connection and choose the following settings:
- EAP method = PEAP
- Phase 2 authentication = MSCHAPV2
- CA Certificate = Use System Certificates
- Domain = umn.edu (do not use d.umn.edu)
- Identity = Use your umd email address, but do not include the @d. Example: [email protected] not [email protected]
Use the app to connect to Wi-Fi
If you are struggling with this step, you can connect to Eduroam using the app on their phone.
- Turn on your headset and open the Oculus mobile app on your phone.
- Tap Devices at the bottom, then select the headset you are currently using.
- Tap Wi-Fi, then tap the Wi-Fi network you want to connect to and enter the password.
Purchasing Apps
The University of Minnesota Duluth does not provide apps or programs with our MetaQuest2 Checkouts. Meta offers many free and paid applications available through the metaquest app store. Any applications purchased from the app store are connected to user accounts and not headsets. This enables users to checkout a device and maintain their own person inventory of pograms and applications
Safety
- Designate an area for activity: As VR can be very immersive, there can be an opportunities to run into walls, lamps, and furniture. Be sure to move furniture and objects from an area in your home or office. This space will be digitally gridded off when you setup boundaries.
- Setup your virtual boundaries.
- To manage additional boundary settings:
- Press the Meta Button on your right Touch controller to pull up your universal menu.
- Select "Library" then select "Settings."
- Select "Physical Space" then select "Create New Boundary."
- To manage additional boundary settings:
- Turn on “Double Tap to Pass Through:”
- From your headset, hover over the clock on the left side of the universal menu.
- Select "Quick Settings" to open the Quick Settings panel.
- Select "Settings" from the top right of the panel.
- Select "Physical Space."
- Select the toggle next to Double Tap for Passthrough to turn this feature on.
- Avoid Cybersickness and nausea.
- VR users can be afflicted by a feeling of dizziness or nausea.
- Take frequent breaks from applications.
- Use a seated boundary vs. a standing one.
- Many applications have comfort settings that to modify framerates and movement styles. These are typically found under Options.

Resetting your device
When MetaQuests are returned to the MediaHub, staff will factory reset the devices. Patrons can also perform a factory reset before they return devices.
- Turn off your headset.
- Hold the power and volume (-) button on your headset down simultaneously until the boot screen loads on your headset.
- Use the volume buttons on your headset to highlight Factory Reset and press the power button.
- Use the volume buttons on your headset to highlight Yes and press the power button.
