Accessibility Proclamation

Governor Tim Walz has proclaimed May 18 to be Global Accessibility Awareness Day.

To remind Minnesotans about the importance of accessibility, Governor Tim Walz proclaimed May 18, 2023 to be Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD). As stated in the Proclamation (PDF):

WHEREAS: The third Thursday of May is designated as Global Accessibility Awareness Day, a day to get everyone talking, learning, and thinking about inclusive digital practices; and

WHEREAS: More than half a million Minnesotans, or approximately 11%, report having one or more disabilities, underlining the importance of building a world where people with disabilities have the opportunities, independence, and respect they deserve; and

WHEREAS: Executive Order 19-01 states that all Minnesota residents have a right to equitable access to government services and employment opportunities, whether in person or online; and

WHEREAS: By supporting accessible technology, we ensure that everyone, including those living with a disability, has access to the same information and government services with readable content, usable interfaces, superior search results, and effective mobile access; and

WHEREAS: Creating accessible digital content and services is a shared responsibility as is enlightening others about digital access and inclusion.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, TIM WALZ, Governor of Minnesota, do hereby proclaim Thursday, May 18, 2023, as: DIGITAL ACCESSIBILITY DAY in the State of Minnesota.
