Apple recently announced it will no longer provide security updates for QuickTime for Windows. (QuickTime for Macs will continue to be supported.) Because unsupported software increases the risks from viruses and other security threats, it is recommended that Windows users who don't need QuickTime uninstall it from their computers.
Who Needs QuickTime?
Most Windows users don't actually need QuickTime anymore, as Windows runs all the key Apple media formats that QuickTime could. And iTunes on Windows no longer requires the program.
However, some third-party programs depend on QuickTime, such as Adobe’s Premiere Pro and NVivo. QuickTime will continue to work for these programs.
How to Remove It
ITSS staff are working with the University computer management group to automatically uninstall QuickTime from Windows computers that are on Active Directory.
For computers not on Active Directory, you can manually uninstall QuickTime as follows:
- Open the Control Panel
- Click "Uninstall a program" under Programs
- Select "QuickTime" in the list, and click "Uninstall." (If you don’t see QuickTime in the list here, you don’t have QuickTime installed.)
The QuickTime uninstaller will remove both the QuickTime desktop application and the QuickTime browser plug-in.
