Privacy: Protecting Your Digital Footprint

Reduce your vulnerability online and guard your data to minimize the ways you are tracked online.

Jenny Blaine, Security Analyst with UMN's Twin Cities Office Information Technology (OIT), explained in an April 22 , 2021 email to IT@UMN:

In today's digital world, it is almost impossible to eliminate our digital footprint or stop every organization from collecting information about us; we can only reduce it. The April 2021 edition of the "OUCH!" newsletter covers ways to protect and limit access to your personal data.

Highlights:

  • Many free services such as Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram collect data about you regardless of the privacy settings you choose.
  • Limit the information you share via social media as that information is often valuable to attackers (e.g. you are going on vacation, so your accounts may be unmonitored for a while).
