New Production Storage in Place

It offers the campus better performance with less power consumption.

The year-long RFP process was completed in January. Pure Storage was the selected technology.

The new array was received during the first week of February. It was configured quickly and fully with the help of Pure Storage engineers. Migration to the new array was completed in two weeks. During that time we moved about 350 systems and 130 Terabytes (TB) of data.

Providing Improvements

Pure Storage is a flash array, consisting of only solid state drives. This will provide more consistent storage performance. The array will be able to provide enough throughput for any foreseeable workload over the next five years. Average round-trip latency has dropped from 25ms to 0.5ms. Power consumption of the entire array is about 1800 watts, which is about 5000 watts less than the old array.

Next Steps

We still need to fully decommission the old storage array. A few services still use it but they will be migrated soon. We hope to power off the old array by the end of April.
