Wireless Improvements

ITSS heard you. WiFi coverage continues to be improved following last year's campus IT survey.

What's the Process?

The WiFi coverage process starts by developing current signal strength maps of each building or specific area mentioned in the survey. Next, our network team develops predictive coverage maps based on Aruba specifications (old coverage was based on Cisco WiFi technology). Then the current and proposed maps are distributed to all building occupants for their input.

Once that input is incorporated into the final design, the project goes to Facilities Management for conduit, cabling, and ceiling work. During the installation process, Facilities Management and our low voltage contractor follow safety protocols outlined in the University's Sunrise Plan to ensure the health and safety of students, faculty, and staff. While that work progresses, network staff work on procuring and configuring the wifi access points and various behind-the-scenes processes.

What's Been Upgraded Over the Summer?

During the summer of 2020 we completed an all-floors upgrade for:

  • Natural Resources Research Institute - Duluth
  • Labovitz School of Business & Economics

What Will Be Upgraded Before the 1st of the Year?

3 other areas/facilities are scheduled for upgrades yet this year.

  1. Kirby Student Center Terrace: Outdoor Wifi is being installed now and will be operational by the time you read this.
  2. Darland Administration Building: Upgrade will get underway around October 1.
  3. Swenson Science Building: Work will proceed after Thanksgiving and should be complete before the first of the year.

Thank You

We'd like to thank everyone involved for their input, cooperation, and patience. We hope you enjoy your new service.
