Next Generation Network Phase 2

UMD's wired network will be upgraded building-by-building. Stay updated on when you will be affected.

Phase 2: The Wired Network

Starting April 12 work will begin on phase 2 of the University of Minnesota’s system-wide Next Generation Network (NGN) project. This phase will include upgrading the wired network (also known as the distribution/edge segment) for the University of Minnesota Duluth. Work will start in non-academic buildings during Spring Semester, and will continue in housing and academic buildings over the summer.

Building-by-Building Process

The upgrade work will occur, building-by-building and while work is underway, WiFi and wired network services (including telephone services) to the building will be intermittently unavailable. An outage period will depend on the amount of equipment to replace and upgrade. This work has already been successfully completed on other University of Minnesota campuses. WiFi and wired network service is stable and performing well on the new equipment.

Stay Updated on When You Will be Affected

Communications will be sent directly to departments in each building and to people whose official campus address indicates they have an office in that building about that building's schedule. Please be sure your campus directory address is correct in order to see these messages. You will also be able to see the full schedule by visiting NGN: Schedule.
